I got knocked the %#@& out!

So I was feeling bad Sunday. I didn't eat a whole lot… at least not a whole lot for me. I figured a good night sleep would help. With 3 childrens, I don't get many restful nights… so I took a sleeping pill or 2 of some sort. Around 1:30, baby girl decided that she was hungry. I had no problem getting up and taking her a bottle. Last thing I remember is heading toward the door of her room. Next thing I know, my wife is standing over me looking worried. I had completely passed out. I tried to stand up and got way dizzy so I went back to the floor. At some point, I felt a piece of my tooth on the floor. I'm not sure how I knew it was a piece of my tooth, but after I felt it, I reached up to my mouth to find a chunk missing.

There is a few lucky points to this:

  1. the tooth I broke already had a chip missing from a fall off a bike when I was a kid
  2. I didn't hurt anything else… aside from a bruise on one arm and a scratch on the other
  3. I didn't break the laminate floor, a wall, a door, a bed, etc. nor did I fall on a child

But damn did I get knocked the fuck out!

digitize books *and* fight spam all at once!

Saw this at Boing Boing and then at Lifehacker. reCAPTCHA is a twist on the traditional CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) system. reCAPTCHA uses the user input to decipher words that are not recognizable by OCR software used when digitizing books.

Here's how: the reCAPTCHA system displays two different words: one the computer knows and one it doesn't know. To pass the test, a user needs to input the known word correctly. The computer then assumes that the unknown word was also entered correctly.

But, what about the accuracy on the book digitizing side? What if the user tried to fool the system and entered only one word, which just happened to be the known word, correctly? To increase the confidence that a particular unknown word was entered correctly, the reCAPTCHA system uses the unknown words numerous times.

…but not all that often.

I wonder if Segway will develop a Segway/stroller combo now? And why wouldn't they? They have a product that hauls a golf bag. Kids are much lighter than a bag full of golf clubs…. usually…

google firefox referral widget for wordpress

This is my first plugin to widget conversion. I found Justin Watt's Firefox Referral Plugin for Wordpress. And while, as you can see, I love ad and referral links over yonder in my sidebar, I hate having to modify core or theme code to do it.

Hooray for Widgets!

Using Wei Wei's code for Tag Cloud Widget for UTW as a base, I mashed Justin's code into a widget form.

Have fun with it.
