Du or Du not. Who said "There is No Tri"?

Posted on August 14th, 2008 by dandavis

Two years after dragging my body across the finish line of the Rock ' n ' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA, I've decided that I really need to get back into shape. And, to try and motivate myself to do that, I've set a goal to complete a triathlon by the end of the year. Depending on the event schedule in this area, I might miss that goal though I hope to at least be ready for a tri by January.

Since my weakest link prepping for a tri is my swimming, I decided to go ahead and register for a duathlon… I'm signed up to take part in the Cape Henry Duathlon & RunFest on November 15th.

This is just going to be a bunch o' links.

To start, here's a list of 80 Awesome Weight Loss Tips over at Zen Habits. Plenty of tips for everyone.

And, here are a bunch of posts from Mehdi over at StrongLifts.com:

OK, in spite of the post title, here's something that's not weight loss, diet, or fitness related. I stumbled upon this cool game over at Albino Blacksheep: Bloxorz. I'm stuck at level 28. Stupid game.

I got bored/inspired today. I have created a Yahoo! group called PaleoFitness which so far has 1 member… me. There is a good description of what I had in mind on the Y! group page, so I will refrain from repeating it here. Besides, the name should be pretty self-explanatory.

I have also decided to spend a few bucks and register PaleoDan.com. I plan to post some before and after photos (which reminds me, I need a new after photo. My last one was 30 or 40 pounds ago.), maybe some sample menu plans (um, 1 large portion meat, 1 small portion fruit, 1 – 2 medium portions vegetables… pretty simple really), and bunches of links to other sites that will have actual useful information. I'm sure I'll think of more stuff to put on it, but it'll make for a good start. Mainly I just wanted to prevent anyone else from claiming the name PaleoDan as their own!

I have been on my diet almost 3 months now so I figured it was time to get some blood work done to see how that looks. (Rather upset with myself for not having it done when I first started the diet.) On the right, in the sidebar, you'll see a section labeled "my health info". I plan to keep that updated with current weight and blood chemistry info. I don't care for the layout atm. I am planning, at the very least, to graph my weight loss… it's more dramatic when you can see it on a pretty picture. :)

See what I mean?

what the hell

OK, so I figured I'd go ahead and use this thing which I spent so much time installing. Doesn't so much matter whether or not people read… I just ran out of other fun things to do on the interweb, so here I am.

So,

As you should be able to see on the left, I've started using Flickr to store some of my photos… some of them were taken by Cyn.

And, while I am at it, I might as well use this as a good place to tell the one or two people who visit this site per year about the Paleo diet. Short of it is that you eat foods that your body is designed to eat. A lot of the crap in today's diet (grains, sugar, additives) are what's causing a multitude of diseases… even some that you wouldn't normally attribute to diet. I won't be able to do the subject justice, so go pick up a book… my favorite is Ray Audette's Neanderthin. (And, at only $6.99 new why the hell wouldn't you? Aren't you, of all people, worth it?) Another decent book, although I don't agree with his low fat approach, is The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain. Oh, and following this way of life eating plan, I have lost 52 pounds in a very short amount of time. (2.5 months and, yes, I know it's probably way too fast, but I am not starving nor depriving myself. I'm simply eating evolutionarily appropriate foods when I get hungry.)

To supplement the diet, I recently (today) [re]started going to kung fu class*. I used to go 2-3 times per week, but mandatory employment modification put the kibosh on that. So, after an almost 2 year long hiatus, I have returned to the kwoon… and damn it if I didn't get my ass kicked. But it feels great… I may change my mind in the morning when I can't stand up, but right now I feel awesome. If you are interested and live in or around Cary, NC, the school is called Way of the Dragon Martial Arts. It's more about self-defense than pretty belts. And, as an added bonus, you get to play with some long, pointy weapons.

Fin.

* – "class" really doesn't feel like the right word, but I'm tired of thinking for today, so "class" will have to do.
