Concept2 Logbook

Posted on September 16th, 2009 by dandavis

I saw that Concept2 had provided an iGoogle gadget to pull a rower's stats from their logbook. A few quick strokes with vi and I replicated some of that functionality as a Wordpress widget.

Concept2 Logbook Widget Source

Save the text file above as concept2-logbook.php and put it in the /wp-content/plugins directory of your Wordpress installation. The widget uses wget and grep so if you are on Windows, this widget might not work. If you get the Windows versions of those two utilities, you might be able to get it to work. If I ever get the notion, I'll convert it to use cURL instead of wget.

Cisco FWSM locked context restoration

Posted on June 15th, 2008 by dandavis

OK, so you have a Cisco Firewall Service Module installed in a 6509 or 6513, whatev, and it's setup in multi context mode. It's running, it's got multiple contexts configured, it's passing production traffic and everything is honky dory.

Well, you decide to futz around in a new context and lock yourself out when you try to update the AAA config or some such thing… there are tons of ways you could do this… trust me… been there, done that. Now, if it weren't for all those production contexts running, you can just reload the blade and get back to your last known good config. But how can you recover without reloading the whole dag-blamed thing?

Well, assuming that you did not lock yourself out of the SYSTEM context and the ADMIN context still has IP connectivity to a TFTP server, then you can try to force feed some corrective commands into the context.

First, create a config file (e.g., BROKENCONTEXTNAME-restore.cfg) on your TFTP server that has the commands needed to correct the problem… I sure hope you know what they are… you do know what you did to screw it up and how to fix it right?

Then, once that's done, TFTP the restoration config file up to the FWSM:

host-FWSM# copy tftp://192.168.1.1/restore.cfg disk:/BROKENCONTEXTNAME-restore.cfg

Now, just cram that file down the context's throat… (This assumes that the context's regular and working start-config is saved in BROKENCONTEXTNAME.cfg):

host-FWSM# conf t
host-FWSM# context BROKENCONTEXTNAME
host-FWSM# config-url disk:/BROKENCONTEXTNAME-restore.cfg
host-FWSM# config-url disk:/BROKENCONTEXTNAME.cfg
host-FWSM# delete disk:/BROKENCONTEXTNAME-restore.cfg

At this point, all should be well. Go ahead, try it. If it didn't work, well, you screwed it up worse than you thought. You might just need to reload the blade… to hell with the production traffic.

i am a lazy slacker

Yes, that must be the case because I have not even thought of posting anything here over the past 24 days… Or, maybe it's not so much that I am 'lazy' or a 'slacker', but instead that I am exhausted. How long does it take for 2 pair of baby teeth to come in? S2 has been struggling with hers for at least the past month. Bottom two are through and quite painful when she chomps down on an unsuspecting thumb. The top two, however, are stretching her gums but refuse to erupt. I don't think she likes it much at all. And, honestly, we're not too thrilled with it either. I miss sleep. I really do.

two cool star wars items in one post!

How cool is this going to be?!?!

So, while reading some of my favorite RSS feeds this morning (Boing Boing, Dooce, and so on), I came upon this post over at Thingamababy: Deconstructing a Star Wars AT-AT Imperial Walker Baby Stroller. Oh, and if you are as interested in the stroller as the AT-AT job, Thingamababy is the place for you.

Check out the pic:

Isn't an AT-AT Imperial Walker stroller just the coolest?

Well, being curious as to what other goodies I might find, I followed the link to the album, where I eventually found these photos:

My son has eyes for no hero other than Spiderman. And I love all things Star Wars. Now we have something we can both enjoy. :)

I've been too {lazy, busy} to write any posts lately.

serenity goodness

Two cool things this morning about Serenity which, by the way, opened at #2 in the box office last weekend.

First: Universal has made the first 9 minutes of the movie available here.

Second: This is an older link (from 30 Sept), but it's still cool. It's Orson Scott Card's review of the movie. I think this snippet speaks volumes on what Card thought of Serenity:

Those of you who know my work at all know about Ender's Game. I jealously protected the movie rights to Ender's Game so that it would not be filmed until it could be done right. I knew what kind of movie it had to be… [Serenity] is the kind of movie that I have always intended Ender's Game to be (though the plots are not at all similar)… And I'll tell you this right now: If Ender's Game can't be this kind of movie, and this good a movie, then I want it never to be made. I'd rather just watch Serenity again.

ok, here's the deal…

I know that I don't have too many people coming by, but those of you who do stop by need to start helping me out… I noticed speeling errors in my last two posts (I am too lazy to go back to earlier posts…). So, please, if you see any anything rong, feel free to drop me a line.

Howdy, all. (See? We don't all say y'all! Although that doesn't sound quite right…)

Howdy, y'all!

I got tired of not having anything on my website, so here's something new. If you are interested, photos of meh kids are here.

Moving forward, I might post about my latest hobby. Or, possibly my current diet or workout program. More likely, though, I'll just keep updating the photos of my kids and the rest of the site will go unused. We'll see how it goes.
